Payne's research in the Central African Republic was successful. While there, she was able to study infrasonic calls. About half of the elephant calls recorded by the computer were calls that the scientists themselves couldn't hear. By looking back over the videos of elephant behavior, Payne hopes to understand what these calls mean.

Payne's research also linked the number of calls to the number of elephants. She's still analyzing the data, but it now looks as if elephants can be counted by sounds, as has been done with whales. "This is turning out to be wonderful," Payne says. "If you listen carefully to the calls of an elephant group you can figure out how many there are, and who they are—whether there's a healthy balance of babies, adult males, and females. The calls of elephants open a window on the lives and health of hidden elephant populations." It is hoped that knowing how many elephants live in the forest and where those elephants roam will help conservationists gather support for protecting the habitat elephants need. This news is good for elephants, and it is good for Katy Payne, who has found a way to use her scientific work in the service of conservation.
